Stuck, lost a hero, or found something that is clearly not meant to happen? Most answers are below. If yours is not, email contact@mcalbyrne.com. A real person reads every message, usually within a couple of working days.
Saves & backups
The game saves automatically as you play. CONTINUE on the title screen picks up where you left off. HEROES on the title screen holds separate save slots, so you can keep a hero of each class going at once.
Your saves live only on your iPhone, inside the game's own storage. There is no account and no cloud save, so we cannot see or restore them from our side.
They are, however, included in your iPhone's normal iCloud or computer backup, like any other app data, as long as backups are turned on (Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup).
Yes. Deleting the app deletes its saves from your device. If you need the space but want to keep your heroes, use Offload App instead (Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Bring a Sword): it removes the game but keeps its data, and everything is still there when you reinstall.
Move it with a device backup. Any of these carries the game's saves across:
- Quick Start — set up the new iPhone next to the old one and transfer directly.
- iCloud backup — back up the old phone, then choose "Restore from iCloud Backup" while setting up the new one.
- Computer backup — back up with Finder (Mac) or the Apple Devices app / iTunes (Windows), then restore it to the new phone.
Reinstalling the game on a fresh phone without restoring a backup starts you from scratch.
Dying
That depends on the mode you picked when you started the hero:
- Adventure (the default) forgives. Fall, and a rite brings you back. Run out of rites and the region resets, but you keep your level and your gear.
- One Life does not forgive. When the rites are gone, so is the hero. It is an opt-in challenge, switched on with the ONE LIFE toggle on the class screen before you begin.
No. The mode is chosen when the hero is created and stays with that hero. If you want to try the other one, start a new hero in another slot under HEROES.
We are sorry for your loss, but no. Saves never leave your phone, so there is nothing on our side to restore, and that is rather the point of One Life.
Controls & options
The game is played in portrait with two thumbs. The stick at the lower left moves your hero. The buttons at the lower right attack, dodge, use your class abilities and drink potions. The pause button (II, top right) opens the options.
Yes. Turn on LEFT-HANDED in the options (the pause button, or OPTIONS on the title screen). It swaps the sides, so you move with your right thumb and fight with your left.
Subtitles are on by default for the whole voiced story, and you can turn them off in the options (the pause button, or OPTIONS on the title screen). The same menu has a TEXT SIZE setting for larger text, plus music, effects and voice volumes, screen shake, camera and haptics.
Yes. Tap to move to the next line, or tap SKIP at the top right of a story card to end it.
Purchases & refunds
No. Bring a Sword is a one-time purchase. There are no ads, no in-app purchases, no energy timers and no account. Everything in the game, including the merchants' Unmarked Crates, is bought with gold you earn by playing.
Purchases are handled by Apple, so refunds are too. We cannot see or refund App Store payments ourselves. To request one, go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with your Apple Account, choose "Request a refund" and pick Bring a Sword.
Performance
iPhone running iOS 16 or later. The game does not need an internet connection, and airplane mode is fine.
- Close other apps running in the background, especially video, navigation and camera apps.
- Turn off Low Power Mode while playing. iOS slows the processor and caps the frame rate when it is on.
- Play somewhere cool and out of a thick case if the phone is hot. iOS slows a hot phone down to protect it.
- Keep some free storage (a few GB) and keep iOS up to date.
- If something still looks wrong, restart the phone and try again, then tell us which iPhone model you have.
Report a bug
The more of these you include, the faster we can find it:
- Your iPhone model and iOS version (Settings > General > About)
- The game version, if you can find it (Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Bring a Sword)
- Your class, roughly where you were, and what you were doing
- What happened, and what you expected to happen
- A screenshot or screen recording, if you have one
If you have turned on Share With App Developers (Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements), Apple may also send us an anonymous crash report. See the privacy policy.
